February Fever

Dear Readers,

As the nip of winter leaves, we wanted to indulge our community with an engaging series of articles on signage in India. There have been few who have not been enticed by the curious signs in our country that pop up on the rear of auto-rickshaws and sides of lamp-posts. Phone numbers of magicians, wedding planners and caterers happen on any wall space available. We are a talkative nation and we continue to verbally assault the environment. In this very democratic environment, we designers and architects come in trying to find patterns that can allow for a logical type of wayfinding. In this issue we bring you delightful conversations that ensued from our interactions with esteemed architects and designers at the top of their professions – Atja Apituley of Mijksenaar, Netherlands, Michel van Ackere of Maki and Associates, Japan, Suparna Bhalla of Abaxial, New Delhi and Rahul Gore of OPOLIS, Mumbai.

Our work at WTC, Noida yielded solutions for way-finding that blend with the architecture and environment. Take a peek at the inside our monthly Saturday Forum at Lopez Design, where collaborations and fresh insights begin, renew and propel design forward on the kitchen table.

On a personal note, from my hometown Ahmedabad, an invigorating meeting with perfectionist veteran designer Dhun Karkaria confirmed why excellence can only be achieved by fidgeting constantly with detail and never compromising. An old friend Subroto Bhowmick gifted a wonderful calendar with intricate handwork: the craftsmanship of India constantly informs our world of visual communications and ties us firmly to tradition.

As I write, we have a stunning installation come up for longstanding clients STL at the Auto Expo in Pragati Maidan. Even as the digital interface dominates, we at Lopez Design continue to engage with the tactile and sensory world of human experience – in this case, yes really – nuts and bolts.

Catch the spring, the turn of colors and the freshness of the year with this issue of February Fever!
