For UNICEF’s 70th year in India, we designed a unique interactive print calendar design that looked back at its history in India, celebrating UNICEF’s key milestones in our country through an exquisite mobile application.

History in perspective
Partnering with the government of India for the past 70 years, UNICEF has had wide ranging impact in many sectors. We set out to champion these stories to bring awareness and a holistic understanding of UNICEF’s role in India and achievements across sectors over seven decades. We further connected these to UNICEF’s current missions in India.

Balancing print and digital
The concept of an immersive calendar to create the ‘world of UNICEF’ grew to include all its initiatives with various stakeholders and partners over time in an A1 size rendition.

We retained the print-form, which provides desktop convenience, while introducing a version with advanced technology. Illustration was brought in as a differentiator from photography, inspired by the 2D perspective of Mughal miniature paintings with minute details. Zooming in, you could find intricate stories in the digital version. A foil layer was brought in to create a sheen in the print version.

When content is king
To paint an accurate picture of UNICEF, we thoroughly researched its initiatives. Issues like gender equality, inclusiveness and primarily, as well as moving away from a typical picture of rural India, were all important. Collecting data from different UNICEF teams, we recorded their memories of numerous initiatives and goals fulfilled during their tenure. It was important for the stories to have a personal touch, to bring out UNICEF’s humanistic interventions. For instance, Zoya’s Anaemia story is dictated by Zoya, a 14-year old girl who is now living a healthy life because of the support provided for her nutrition.

When you scan the image on the calendar with a phone, it takes you forward to an app we developed in-house with our technology partner, SPLAT Studio. This takes you to a richly illustrated landscape - the world of UNICEF in India with many stories of interventions and achievements through partnerships, which are told through pop-ups. New stories will be released every two months over the course of the year.

Moving Ahead: Moldable Design
Scanning an image from the landscape, the user gets the app downloaded. The system is progressive, revealing a small key story which opens the door to a bigger experience.

Through these narrations, people get an on-the-ground understanding of problems the country faces today and UNICEF’s causes. The app aims to make users interested in contributing to this work and become partners for change with buttons like ‘contribute now’ and ‘share now’. Supporting the idea that 'content is key', the calendar brings the knowledge of history to encourage and support people in making better decisions for the future.
